Nutrition
Pick up a potato and you're holding an amazingly nutrient dense food! Calories in potatoes are low, they're virtually fat-free, bursting with vitamins and minerals, contain absolutely no cholesterol and when served with their skins are a great source of fibre.
In addition to providing energy, potatoes also are a vital source of vitamin E, potassium and iron. It is a myth that potatoes are fattening. It is only the addition of fat containing products such as butter, cheese and oil, and the manor in which they are cooked which affects their calorific value.
Potatoes are an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet. They form part of a food group called starchy carbohydrates and are essential energy providers. It is recommended that around half of our energy should be provided by carbohydrates. You should aim to eat around 5-10 portion of starchy foods per day.
Carbohydrate provides fuel for the brain and is stored in active muscles to power them when you're on the go. The brilliant thing about potatoes is that compared to rice and pasta you get a barrel-load of nutrients as a bonus prize - and no fat. Perfect!!! (British Potatoes Council)
